The Aromanian of Greece is a digital database that, upon its full development, will include the systematic documentation and study of the vernacular and its varieties of the Greek Vlachs. The project adheres strictly to scientifically established methods and techniques at every stage — from research, collection, and preservation of material, to its archiving and public dissemination. The need for this project arises from the fact that the culture of the Vlachs of Greece has not yet been systematically studied and documented within an integrated framework, despite the existence of numerous valuable works focusing on specific localities of Vlach settlement or on particular aspects of their culture.
Language, undoubtedly, constitutes a primary element of any culture. It does not merely record values and collective mentalities, nor does it serve simply as a tool of thought. Language produces thought; it embodies ideologies and worldviews, reflects and reproduces moral codes, perceptions of nature and the cosmos, and much more. All of these are inscribed in songs, myths, folktales, proverbs, riddles, toponyms, and other forms of expression.
The project, aims to collect and make publicly available the vernacular of the Vlachs of Greece in the form of digital archives. These archives will be freely accessible to interested parties for further scientific analysis and study.
This project involves both the collection and documentation of material drawn from the oral tradition of the Greek Vlachs through rigorous scientific methods, and the public dissemination of this culture through the use of new digital technologies. The Society’s website will be continuously enriched with the collected material, featuring an interactive map, multimedia content (photographs, sound recordings, videos, etc.), and other accessible forms of presentation.
