Aromanian Audio Dictionary

This online dictionary is a valuable tool for discovering Rimenesti (the so-called Arvanitovlach language) of Kefalovryso, Pogoni (Mitjintei) — a living branch of Balkan Latin. It is based on the extensive and methodical work of Babis Mentis, who devoted decades to documenting and preserving the linguistic diversity of the Vlach communities.

The dictionary includes entries from Greek to Vlach and Vlach to Greek, making it accessible to native speakers, researchers, students, and anyone interested in exploring or deepening their understanding of the Vlach language and culture. Each entry in the Greek–Vlach section is accompanied by an audio recording that conveys pronunciation and the oral rhythm of the language, contributing to the preservation and revitalization of a rich yet often undervalued cultural tradition. Audio clips will soon be added to the Vlach–Greek section as well.

The aim of the dictionary is not only to document the Vlach language but also to strengthen its intergenerational transmission, encourage its use, and increase its accessibility to a wider audience through digital technologies.

The Vlach language is not a fossil of the past — it is a living bearer of history, identity, and memory. We invite you to discover it, listen to it, and, why not — speak it.

The creation of the dictionary is the result of a collective and voluntary effort:

  • Lexical documentation and recordings: Babis Mentis
  • Scientific supervision: Theodoros Kouros
  • Web platform development: Apostolis Nanis
  • Audio editing: Marina Kyrlitsia

The project was supported by the Cyprus University of Technology, which funded the processing of the audio material.
