The Neighborhood of Cine Volos – A Multimodal, Student-Led Ethnography Project
The Neighborhood of Cine Volos is a student-led ethnographic initiative developed within the course Multimodal Ethnography at the Cyprus University of Technology (Department of Communication & Internet Studies), in collaboration with the Center of Performing Arts MITOS. The project explores the Cine-Volos neighborhood in Limassol — a historically working-class and culturally diverse area undergoing processes of redevelopment and transformation.

Through fieldwork, film, sound, mapping, and visual documentation, students investigated how residents, workers, and passers-by experience everyday life, memory, and change in their neighborhood. The project combines academic research and artistic practice, transforming the neighborhood into a living ethnographic archive where stories, places, and encounters are preserved and re-imagined through multimodal media.
This initiative forms part of the wider collaboration between the Ethnographic Research Lab, Cyprus University of Technology, and MITOS, contributing to the annual Neighborhood of Cine Volos Festival — a socially engaged cultural platform that connects research, art, and community participation.
